Write a Novel in 27 Days

post time 3. November 2007 member Lisa

It’s NaNoWriMo time! That’s National Novel Writing Month! I know. I’m letting you know three days into the month. You’ll already be getting a late start. But better late than never. Right? You’ve still got 27 days of good writing time left.

What’s NaNoWriMo all about? It’s an annual event where thousands of people from all over the world commit to writing a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. The idea is not only just to get it down on paper, it’s all about achieving the goal of writing a novel. With a 30-day deadline, there’s no time to stress, over think, or procrastinate.

According to Wikipedia, “Nearly 80,000 participants registered in 2006, with almost 13,000 winners verifying their novels as meeting the goal. The cumulative word total for all participants in 2006 was 982,564,701.” The best part? In 2004, 2005, and 2006, 50% of the proceeds from the sale of NaNoWriMo t-shirts and mugs were used to build libraries for children in Southeast Asia.

Be patient if you are unable to access the website the first time you try. As has happened in years past, the site is very busy. Just keep trying. So get started! You’re only three days behind!

Organizing Projects and Deadlines

post time 3. November 2007 member Genesis

Things were a bit of a mess around here yesterday. About 6 am, I realized that I had misread a deadline. Upon checking, it turned out that the articles were due in a couple of hours, rather than the couple of days I thought I had. As a result, I had two deadlines crashing down at the same time . . . something that could have been easily prevented and a lot less stressful!

It´s always a good idea to double check your deadlines, but as I´ve discovered, it´s also important to find a way to put them in front of you . . . just having them in a Word document on your computer isn´t enough.  Here are a few ideas to keep your deadlines straight.

  • Have a giant wall calendar to mark projects. Try writing with a different color marker for each project, with a line to the deadline date.
  • Make a card with the project name, details and deadline date to stick up on your bulletin board, rearrange as new projects come in so everything is always in the order it has to be finished.
  • Use Remember the Milk to remind you when things are due. They have a variety of ways to be reminded, including an email and it´s free.

How do you stay on top of your deadlines and projects?

Do You Want to Ace that Interview?

post time 1. November 2007 member Lisa

I stumbled across a great site for job seekers. It’s CrackInterview.info. Their 64 Interview Answers You Need to Know covers everything you might be asked in a job interview, and coaches you on how best to answer them. For example, questions like:

  • What good books have you read lately?
  • What was the toughest challenge you’ve ever faced?
  • What would you say to your boss if he’s crazy about an idea, but you think it stinks?

Or maybe the interviewer just gives you the silent treatment. CrackInterview covers it all. Check it out!

Capitalizing on Holidays

post time 1. November 2007 member Genesis

Did you know that November first is All Saints Day? Technically, the second is The Day of the Dead, but it is often celebrated on the first as well.

For weeks now, I´ve noticed even food vendors bringing out wreaths and bouquets of dried flowers for people to purchase and place on the graves of loved ones and this got me thinking. Do you capitalize on holidays? Obviously, big ones like Halloween or Christmas are going to offer great opportunities to provide discounts, contests and even specialize products . . . but what about other holidays that are a little less publicized?

Here are a few examples that you could use, to encourage clients to flock to your products or services for a special day. I´ve only included a handful of ideas here, you can check out this site for more.

Small Ways To Live Large

post time 1. November 2007 member Dave Ledoux

What do you buy someone for Christmas or a birthday who has everything?

It was a major problem for my family 10 years ago. Falia and I wanted for nothing. Business was brilliant and money was abundant. Whenever anyone asked what I wanted for my birthday, I would say “nothing!” with a big grin.

But you know that when it comes to giving gifts, it’s the thought that counts, not the price tag. What was something that I enjoyed that would make a meaningful gift?

In 1997, I found the answer. Gourmet coffee.

When I was first launching my direct marketing business in 1994, I drank any brown swill that had the audacity to call itself coffee. By ‘97 the business was doing $4 million per year in sales, plus I was making a six figure income from my baby internet business selling $6000 websites. On a Caribbean cruise in the winter of ‘97 I tasted an ambrosia that ruined my taste buds for boring old store bought coffee. I’ve been a bean snob ever since.

When my family wants to get me a gift, they generally give me gourmet coffee. There is nothing like sitting out on the back deck in the early morning, writing a blog post and enjoying the aroma of a fine cup of joe.

Sometimes I order my coffee online, especially when I want to try a new company’s offerings. I’m actually subscribed to a couple of email newsletters by coffee companies. I got a coupon online this morning from one of my coffee suppliers. If you’d like to try real Gevalia coffee you can use this link for a substantial discount.

Regardless of your personal income, you can live like a bazillionaire by treating yourself like one. Small luxuries and tiny treats can make you feel wonderful, can’t they? What are your private indulgences? Join the discussion in the Money & Lifestyle Forum.

A Special Lunch at The Roadhouse at Mutianyu, Great Wall of China

post time 1. November 2007 member Des Walsh

On the day just under two weeks ago when we visited the Great Wall of China, we also had a great culinary experience at a new restaurant, the Roadhouse, just near the Wall at Mutianyu (about ninety minutes drive northeast of Beijing).

Finding the restaurant was a stroke of luck. We’d actually had a recommendation to go to the Schoolhouse restaurant, which is in itself quite delightful, but had a predominantly Western menu: when we said we’d been hoping for Chinese food, Christine the owner said we should try out her new restaurant down the road a piece, namely the Roadhouse. It’s actually so new that we were told we were the first “walk-in” customers other than friends and family.

The Roadhouse is a business that supports local growers, which in our own neck of the woods we like to do. And that meant special flavor and freshness, as it does here.

Attended by smiling Daisy, we experienced friendly, country-style service and excellent dishes. While we were waiting for our cooked dishes, we were served a complimentary and generous plate of amazingly fresh and crunchy local vegetables - cucumber, baby tomatoes, cos lettuce and some kind of sprouts, with a pot of very yummy “peasant sauce” for dipping.

We then tucked into two main dishes, one with chicken, one with eggplant:

  • the Jiang Bao Chicken was a dish of chicken pieces stir-fried in sweet bean sauce with fresh local walnuts and cucumber
  • the eggplant (aubergine) was local and fried till golden-brown crispy, sauteed with ginger, leeks, dark soy sauce, sugar, salt, tomato-based sauce and green pepper.

And to accompany all this, regularly replenished mugs of beautiful Longjing tea.

Chef Jeremy Taisey hails from Seattle, Washington and is obviously - and justifiably - very proud of his delightful establishment.

The view from the dining area, through a large picture window, is of a whole section of the Great Wall. In the picture below, if you look closely on the top left hand side of the picture, above and left of waiter Daisy’s head, you may be able to discern the features of the sleeping Buddha, also marking the end of that section of the Great Wall.

Good local produce, beautifully prepared, in a friendly, sparkling clean restaurant, with outstanding views.

Deceptively simple, of course. The layout, the furnishings, the stationery, the positioning of the restaurant to enable patrons to look at the Great Wall, staff efficiency and friendly service (even coming out to the parking lot to help translate for us with our driver), the attention to detail and the elegant website all spoke of sophisticated marketing and a high level of attention to detail.

A memorable experience. Thank you Daisy and Jeremy. And Christine for pointing us there. And yes, we have told our Beijing friends!
