Redeveloping Dead Shopping Malls
As shopping malls become too large for their small market, the spaces they once occupied become unused vacuums of real estate. These once iconic mega-centers of retail now dot the American landscape like an acne ridden teenager’s face. But instead of bulldozing these pockmarks, designers are finding innovative ways to redevelop the spaces for new uses. The old layout of parking lots and stores are now evolving into expansive sidewalks and playful environments. This idea of New Urbanism is spawned from the new goals of suburban development to foster communities. From World Changing:
Whether an interior renovation, a community redevelopment or reconstruction happens to an abandoned mall, outcomes target the needs of the community. Instead of viewing these boxes as dead wastelands, we can imagine the various possibilities in which they can be transformed to become new cultural centers.
