Could forums or wikis be so popular if we never had blogs?

Monday, den 3. November 2008

Once upon a time we had websites. Webmasters used to write something on a topic in that website. That was primarily the age of one way communication. The visitors had no opportunity to participate.

As we moved on, internet grew up into a platform (we owe a lot to blogs and forums) for you and me to participate. And now we have Wikis - the comprehensive platform.

Though, blogs and forums are primarily two way communication medium, there is a basic difference between the two. To put it simply, a visitor cannot normally start or direct a discussion in a blog (comments does not empower the reader as much as the author of the blog). But in a forum based platform, the reader can be an active agent to start a discussion on any given topic (allowed by the moderator).

So, what are blogs and what are forums?

To me, my blog is my home and the URL is my residential address. I decorate (design and write posts) my blog, the way I want. I enjoy my freedom of speech in my blog. However, the forum is the place where I interact with different people. It is like a coffee bar, where I can start a discussion and let others contribute with full power. We all share the same privilege. Thus can we say that a forum is more powerful than a blog as far as participation or communication is concerned!

And, here comes wiki - a notebook that stores important aspects of a discussion in the form of a comprehensive article. It is like erasing all the unwanted dialogues of a meeting and writing down the gist in a single page.

What do you think?

Could forums or wikis be so popular if we never had blogs?

Please write a comment under this post or start a discussion in the NBB forum.
