How iTunes University May be Better Than the Real Thing

Thursday, den 19. February 2009

Some new research is showing how always available, multi-media lectures may be more effective than the old fashioned live kind. New Scientist reports on a study conducted by the State University of New York in Freedonia which shows that being able to review a lecture multiple times leads to improved grades.

Those results are not particularly news at all. Of course having access to a lecture, and studying and taking notes on it will help a student retain information better (the other group… Continue reading How iTunes University May be Better Than the Real Thing

How Our Brains Are Affected by Info Overload

Thursday, den 19. February 2009

It’s become a truism that our interactions with technology are changing the way we think and act. But the big question is how exactly we’re being changed. Some say it’s evolving us into higher functioning humans, while others claim our hyper-multitasking and reliance on technology as an outboard brain is dumbing us way down.

Another missive from the negative camp has come around -Maggie Jackson, Author of Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age, says that our ability to deeply focus… Continue reading How Our Brains Are Affected by Info Overload

Report from Middle America: Economy Tanks, Strip Clubs Boom in Nashville

Thursday, den 19. February 2009

We reported earlier this year about the increase in sex toy sales as the economy took a dive. And we’re finding that in Nashville, Tennessee, the same goes for live libidinous entertainment: Jason Helson, manager of popular strip club Déjà Vu, says business has actually improved with the economic downturn. The venue, which advertises “hundreds of beautiful girls and three ugly ones”, has witnessed a boom while most other businesses have suffered. Helson says: “Times are tough, but with any type of vice, people will always find a reason or… Continue reading Report from Middle America: Economy Tanks, Strip Clubs Boom in Nashville

Hey - it’s not all doom and gloom. Especially if you’re a brand trying to do good: the Financial Times report that retail sales of Fairtrade products, led by bananas and coffee, have risen to a record high of £700m up 47 per cent in 2008 on a year earlier. Apparently, much of this has been driven by larger brands like Starbucks and J Sainsbury who have “boosted” their commitment to Fairtrade products and ethical trading.

Kachingle Coordinates Microdonations to Get Content Creators Paid

Thursday, den 19. February 2009

Kachingle is a new service that looks like it could bridge the gap between scattered micropayments and free content. Many old media pundits have been suggesting micropayments as a solution to monetizing dying newspapers and other online content, but historically, micropayments don’t do as well as they should. It’s a hassle to pay every time you want to read an article, and you can often find the same content for free elsewhere.

Kachingle acts as a distributor of microdonations. Member sites would sign up and place a Kachingle… Continue reading Kachingle Coordinates Microdonations to Get Content Creators Paid

Thursday, den 19. February 2009

It started as a blog by Muggerzifter with a few simple rules:
I put the self-timer on 2 seconds, push the button and try to get as far from the camera as I can.
So far, he’s spent the past year+ dashing away from spots all over Rotterdam. Is this the next camera toss?
