Seen in Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn last weekend. We’re not too sure how long ‘Simpler Times’ beer has been sold by the grocer - but it seemed pretty relevant positioning for today’s market.

Nanotechnology Electronics Innovations

Monday, den 23. February 2009

Wired points us to some exciting news on the nanotechnology front. Teams at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Massachusetts Amherst and the University of California Berkeley have had success in developing two new nanotech materials which promise to increase the functionality (and shrink the size) of these atomic level machines.

Wired explains:
Two U.S. teams have developed new materials that may pave the way for ever smaller, faster and more powerful electronics as current semiconductor technology begins to reach the limits of miniaturization.

One team has made tiny transistors — the building block… Continue reading Nanotechnology Electronics Innovations

London’s Royal Parks: Location-Based Narratives

Monday, den 23. February 2009

The use of setting can be the difference between an okay story and a truly great one. Place not only adds context to a narrative, but it can take on a life all its own, playing a vital role in shaping the lives of the characters throughout the tale. With that in mind, London’s Royal Parks organization has commissioned eight authors to find inspiration in the city’s grandest green spaces by penning short stories that take place in them. Participating authors include Will Self, Ali Smith

Tropicana Reverting to Old Package Design

Monday, den 23. February 2009

The people have spoken. Tropicana’s redesigned packaging, which was released to a near universal disdain is being pulled and it will revert back to the classic design next month. Consumers found the new design to be generic looking, confusing and too different from the iconic “straw in an orange” theme.

The New York Times reports:
The about-face comes after consumers complained about the makeover in letters, e-mail messages and telephone calls and clamored for a return of the original look.

Some of those commenting described the new packaging as… Continue reading Tropicana Reverting to Old Package Design

Alternative Volunteering: Don’t Forget the Dessert

Monday, den 23. February 2009

We received an email the other day from Craig’s Kitchen, a community action group that supports their local soup kitchen in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn through fundraising and organizing volunteers. As an alternative for busy city dwellers who want to get involved but might not otherwise have the time, the group has devised a way to expand the scale of their small soup kitchen, asking people to contribute desserts made in the comfort of their own homes.

The idea, called Dessert Corps, invites ten bakers each week to… Continue reading Alternative Volunteering: Don’t Forget the Dessert

Is Heat Surge Ruining the Amish ‘Brand’?

Monday, den 23. February 2009

For those seeking simplicity in a world of ever-increasing technological and societal complexity, what better role model is there than the Amish? In his blog, Kevin Kelly offers a fascinating article about these pioneers of DIY culture.  He explains that the Amish are master tinkerers and far from being unanimously opposed to technology; that technological adoption—like using electricity, GMO corn, etc.—is commonplace.  Depending on one’s parish, the Amish have different policies regarding technological adaptation.  What he says is a big difference between us and them (assuming you’re not Amish)… Continue reading Is Heat Surge Ruining the Amish ‘Brand’?

Impress: The Soft Touch Screen

Monday, den 23. February 2009

The Impress brings a richer tactile experience to the touch screen. A concept design by DIS.PLAY, it’s a touchscreen with an additional layer of soft, flexible foam. It takes away the rigidity of a traditional touchscreen and enables a more robust interaction with data presented onscreen. Impress has all the regular features of a touchscreen with the extra parameter of pressure, enabling users to literally squeeze out information and form and mold three dimensional objects. This is an interesting development… Continue reading Impress: The Soft Touch Screen

Sustainable Design and Community in the Treehouse

Monday, den 23. February 2009

Friday, we had the opportunity to tour Brooklyn’s newest “green space”, a seven story office building on Flatbush Avenue in the Downtown area. Stuffed to the gills with beautiful salvaged and reused materials (from industrial kitchens to carnival-ride horses, and everything in between), the building is currently home to creative businesses for whom sustainability is part of their core mission. One floor belongs to the environmentally focused architecture firm MEx, another to the many tenants of Green Spaces (including coffee distributors, bakeries, sound studios, and video production… Continue reading Sustainable Design and Community in the Treehouse
