The Death of Postmodernism and Emergence of Altermodernism

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

For the Tate Triennial 2009, which opened on February 3, curator Nicolas Bourriaud declares that postmodernism is over and that we are experiencing the emergence of a global ‘altermodernity.’

Bourriaud, the French cultural theorist and co-founder of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, believes that a new form of art is emerging, fueled by non-stop communication and globalization.  He explains that altermodernism is a “sort of dream catcher attempting to capture the characteristics of a modernity specific to the 21st century.”

The Cooka: Maurizio Maiorana’s Roll Up Stove Top

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Maurizio Maiorana has created an ingenious concept design that slims down the footprint of a traditional stove top. The Cooka is a thin tabletop electric cooking device that’s made out of non-toxic Liquid Silicon Rubber, a substance that can sustain itself under high temperatures. The heating elements are made out of silver, which heats up and cools down utensils quickly. Surrounding the silver plates are small holes that blow a stream of hot air around the cooking utensils so excess heat does not escape during cooking. Best of all… Continue reading The Cooka: Maurizio Maiorana’s Roll Up Stove Top

Fail Stickers: Critiquing Life Offline

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Few culture memes carry the same decisively derisive ability to impact as much as the popular “FAIL” label used to punctuate documentation - videos and photographs - depicting life’s various mistakes and mishaps on a blog by the same name. And now thanks to Go Media that same pointed criticism which until recently existed solely in the online space, is now available in a tangible form. Their Fail Stickers remain true to the “original version” - white font on a clear background - and are legible up to… Continue reading Fail Stickers: Critiquing Life Offline

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Financial software maker Intuit recently reached out to us to let us know about a completely cool new program they have launched to help small biz owners get through the economic mess we are in. Personally, I’m hoping they thought I would be a shoe-in for the grand prize. But honestly, this is such [...]

George Parker: Social Networking… Seven Degrees of Separation from Reality?

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Living out in the wilds of Idaho, I have to wait ‘till mid-day to get my hard copy fix of the New York Times… Yeah, I know I can get most of it online hours before, and I usually do. But shit, that’s not the same as spilling your breakfast beer over the print edition and making the ink soak into the tablecloth, so your wife can give you a huge bollocking to start her day on a high note… Anyway, I digress. I look forward to the Sunday edition. Yes… Continue reading George Parker: Social Networking… Seven Degrees of Separation from Reality?

Massive Installation Utilizes 41,000 LEDs

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

We wrote last week about a colorful LED installation on the streets of Paris that blew us away, today we’re inspired by Multiverse, a massive installation by American artist Leo Villareal that features approximately 41,000 LED nodes that run through a 200-foot-long tunnel in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C..

As passerbyers move between the East and West buildings on an airport style people mover, the zillions of lights flickr on and off over head creating rhythmic patterns and abstract configurations.  The custom… Continue reading Massive Installation Utilizes 41,000 LEDs

5 + 1 reasons to stay away from podcasting

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

pThere are lots of pages online to tell you why to podcast. Let me show you the other side./p
h2Why not to Podcast:/h2
ul
li strongReason 1/strong: Search engines cannot read podcast content. If you cannot write transcription of the podcast, there are fewer chances of your podcasts getting very popular among search engines for targeted keywords./li
li strongReason 2:/strong The average incoming link ROI is much less than what you could get if an article in your website or blog received the same popularity./li
li strongReason 3:/strong If you are just turning your blog post into a podcast, chances are less that it will become popular. People normally love to listen to programs like talk shows or hosted music programs (film clips, songs etc. are excluded from “podcast” category). For example, if you are publishing Seth Godin’s interview as a podcast in your blog, it is more likely to gain popularity rather than just another post of your blog./li
li strongReason 4:/strong People normally scan through webpage content. The podcasts do not offer them such flexibility of consumption./li
li strongReason 5:/strong Every medium have their own set of rules. A good writer may not be a great oral communicator. If your friends think that you are better with written text than voice, it is better to listen to them. The same rule applies to writing mode or style of the script./li
li strongReason 6:/strong I will keep this point open for the readers. Please write your comment on podcasting and fill this position./li
/ul
pstrongPodcasting can be a good promotional tool but, do you represent the right market?/strong/p

Pay-Per-Light, With Your Cellphone

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Several towns in Germany have taken saving on energy bills a step further and turned out all the street lights. Residents were initially concerned about crime and personal safety, but a system was developed to allow them to turn the lights on by calling a number from their cell phones. Of course, the bigger the city, the more complicated the system. In Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz (pop. 900), one phone call turns on all the street lights, but in Dörentrup, citizens must plan their routes ahead of time. The BBC

Video: Microvision’s Amazing Mobile Projector

Tuesday, den 24. February 2009

Mobile Industry Review has a mind-blowing video of the Microvision Mobile Projector in action. We originally wrote about Microvision back in 2007, and their efforts have finally come to fruition. The projector is just a little bit bigger than a 3G iPhone, and the quality is incredible. The secret behind the bright display is Microvision’s special technology, which scans a laser beam to paint the picture pixel by pixel.

The Mobile Projector is expected to be released mid-2009, and should only cost about $400-$500. Much of the bulk of the device is due to the… Continue reading Video: Microvision’s Amazing Mobile Projector
