New Marketing Strategy: Buy the Album, Get to Hang Out With the Artist
Wednesday, den 25. February 2009Taking a page from Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails’ recent forays into tiered and pay-as-you-wish pricing strategies for albums, former NIN drummer Josh Freese has developed a wacky but potentially smart pricing system for his new album.
At the first levels you can purchase the CD/DVD, or digital version of the album. Next is the $50 version where you get a t-shirt and a 5 minute thank-you phone call from Freese. $500 will get 15 people a signed CD, t-shirt… Continue reading New Marketing Strategy: Buy the Album, Get to Hang Out With the Artist

New Culinary Movement Brewing in Brooklyn
Wednesday, den 25. February 2009The New York Times published a fantastic article yesterday about a new culinary movement brewing in Brooklyn. Attracted by cheap rent (as opposed to Manhattan) and the experimental nature of the borough, there has been a surge in artisan chefs resurrecting traditional methods and emphasizing old school craftsmanship.
These Brooklynites, most in their 20s and 30s, are hand-making pickles, cheeses and chocolates the way others form bands and artists’ collectives. They have a sense of community and an appreciation for traditional methods and flavors. They also share an aesthetic that’s equal parts… Continue reading New Culinary Movement Brewing in Brooklyn

Extending Product Life Cycles
Wednesday, den 25. February 2009Designer Jamie Latendresse spotted an interesting graphic on the back of a Method hand soap bottle. Alternative uses for the rather large 96 fl, ounce container are suggested, including using the bottle as a canteen, a vase or a piggy bank. A great touch that can get consumers thinking about how to extend the life cycle of their possessions. And as we’ve seen, sometimes reusing is a better idea than recycling due to the fact that… Continue reading Extending Product Life Cycles

Pic: Burn After Seating
Wednesday, den 25. February 2009
Another example of design over-thinking and actually doing damage (to the planet) that we found in Chicago O’Hare airport. Why did they possibly need to invent the electronic rotating plastic seat cover? While there is plenty of noise about green initiatives at this airport there seems to be a lack of attention to detail. If you’re going to go green, you have to go green - not have a service that says:
Old plastic cover is destroyed and never used again… Continue reading Pic: Burn After Seating

End Our Oil Dependency: Walk More
Wednesday, den 25. February 2009With all the talk about developing greener technologies and alternative sources of energy to curb our consumption and clean up the environment, are we ignoring the simplest solution - walking more? Worldchanging asks us to reframe our current thinking and consider the time tested notion of “muscle power” to not only positively impact the health of our planet, but that of its cities and people as well. Their discussion references findings from two older studies - 2003 and 2005 respectively - that offer some stunning statistics… Continue reading End Our Oil Dependency: Walk More

Giving Up Facebook for Lent
Wednesday, den 25. February 2009What strange times we live in. A topic that’s been popping up on the radar recently is whether or not people should give up Facebook for Lent. For those unfamiliar, Lent is a Christian based forty day long period of fasting and prayer that occurs before Easter. Traditionally participants give up something (candy, fast food, TV) as a sign of faith.
It’s interesting to observe how invested in social networking we’ve become. People are doing a lot of hand-wringing over the potential problems that may come from giving… Continue reading Giving Up Facebook for Lent

Massive 3D Street Art
Wednesday, den 25. February 2009Last year, during the Festival of World Culture in Ireland, German artist Edgar Mueller painted one his iconic optical illusions over a 250 square meter patch of asphalt. Using acrylic wall paint to create the scene, it took the artist five days, working 12 hours a day to paint the massive crevasse; which, from the right perspective, looks remarkably realistic.
The below video is a great time lapse piece depicting the creation of the illusion as well as the curious interactions… Continue reading Massive 3D Street Art
