MagCloud: D.I.Y. Magazines
Tuesday, den 31. March 2009Hewlett-Packard is making a bid to become your local newsstand and boutique printing press all-in-one, albeit on a global scale. With their new service MagCloud, H.P. has provided would-be publishers with the infrastructure to produce magazines on any scale - from single issues to thousands of copies - for the flat rate of 20 cents a page. A reasonable cost when you consider that a professional printer will typically charge an initial fee based on a required number of pages and the copy shop down the road… Continue reading MagCloud: D.I.Y. Pic: Voyeur Card
Tuesday, den 31. March 2009
Ged Carroll spotted this protest sticker that twists the image of London’s Oyster transport card to make a statement about British surveillance society.
An article by the BBC last year detailed the extent the Transport for London organization shares its information on travelers:
Police regularly use information on the adult Oyster card system to get details about passenger movements. BBC London has learned that in the past year they made at least 3,000 requests for information.
….Transport for London [has] made it mandatory for children… Continue reading Pic: Voyeur Card

Huffington Post to Fund Investigative Journalists
Tuesday, den 31. March 2009As newspapers continue to swoon in the face of economic troubles, many are looking to foundation-based journalism to assume the task of preserving the hallowed institution of long form investigative reporting. And while this model faces challenges of its own, namely proving its objectivity to potential supporters before receiving funding, it offers a compelling opportunity to serve the public by employing journalists and allowing them to pursue the stories that need to be told.
With that in mind, we were excited to see the Huffington Post leveraging its online presence and credibility… Continue reading Huffington Post to Fund Investigative Journalists

512 Logos From Ecstasy Pills
Tuesday, den 31. March 2009
Swiss artist Frédéric Post has published a book that details 512 etched logos and images that he’s found on ecstasy tablets. An extract of the book says:
“You have spread out my logos on the carpet, how impressive ! I say “my” logos, but I didn’t design them, I just hunted around for them, collected and copied them. They were made anonymously, and through this compilation, this collection, I became their godparent. I am fascinated by these drawings that have been abandoned by their authors. Usually artists sign their… Continue reading 512 Logos From Ecstasy Pills

Study: 8.5 Hours a Day Spent on Screens
Tuesday, den 31. March 2009In an alarming but not all too shocking article, the New York Times revealed that the average American adult is exposed to screens (TVs, cell phones, G.P.S.s) for about 8.5 hours a day. In addition, they are subject to 61 minutes of TV ads and promotions a day. Although most of this exposure is from television, computer usage has usurped radio as the second most common medium.

Sober Spring Fashion
Tuesday, den 31. March 2009
With it’s official start early last week, many the world over are wondering when we’ll actually start to see the colors of spring not just in nature, but also in stores and on sidewalks. This past winter’s fashion was heavy on Victorian and gothic influences with designers like Rick Owens and Anna Demeulemeester boasting rich velvets, high collars, lace, and plenty of black. In a recent exhibit entitled Gothic: Dark Glamour at the Museum at FIT, the curator explained that much of what we consider “gothic”… Continue reading Sober Spring Fashion

George Parker: No One Reads Ad Copy, and Other Chestnuts!
Tuesday, den 31. March 2009I was reading the blog of a famous new media “pundit” the other day, when I stumbled across the statement everyone in the communications business has repeatedly heard since time immemorial… “No one reads ad copy.” I will give the “pundit” a certain license to suggest that might be true when applied to some of the newer forms of digi-baloney floating around the ether, and yes, I am talking about Twitter, ‘cos with a limit of 140 characters, to paraphrase dear old Gertrude Stein, there’s not much there there… Although, by… Continue reading George Parker: No One Reads Ad Copy, and Other Chestnuts!
