Buy Designer, Do Good at New Paris Store

Monday, den 9. March 2009

If you still have the disposable income to buy Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Stella McCartney, you might also want to buy a plane ticket to Paris and visit a new store in the Marais called Merci. The shop is the brainchild of high-end childrenswear designers Bonpoint, who decided to use their fashion industry muscles to do a little good in the world. They’ve stocked their store with custom pieces by some of the world’s most coveted designers, donating 100% of the profit to a children’s cause in Madagascar… Continue reading Buy Designer, Do Good at New Paris Store

TOMS Shoes’ Blake Mycoskie Talks to PSFK

Monday, den 9. March 2009

The one-for-one model isn’t working so well for OLPC, but it’s doing wonders for a small company called TOMS Shoes, which donates one pair of shoes for every pair sold. The shoes have a distinctly traditional look to them (they’re modeled after the traditional Argentinian alpargata, a simple slip-on canvas shoe), but they’ve certainly crossed over into the mainstream. As TOMS preps to launch its most recent design collaboration with Element Skateboards, PSFK talks to founder Blake Mycoskie about where the company came from, and where it’s going.

What… Continue reading TOMS Shoes’ Blake Mycoskie Talks to PSFK

The Recession & Environmentally Conscious Goods

Monday, den 9. March 2009

preserve.png

What impact is the recession having on green goods - a sector that seemed to be booming until everything went a little south? Common perception is that everyone has got budget conscious and that they’re choosing price over environmental considerations - but is that the case?

In the New York Times magazine, Rob Walker looks at the brand Preserve that uses recycled plastics to make kitchen products. Demand for recycled plastics has plummeted, Rob says, making it much cheaper to acquire the stuff to make Preserve products but there might… Continue reading The Recession & Environmentally Conscious Goods

Is this right time to start an online business?

Monday, den 9. March 2009

pThere are different ways to separate one business model from another. And as web is evolving everyday, it is not enough just to sit and watch your website performing. It is what a newbie will do before he or she finds a reason to move ahead./p
pHowever, if you are very serious about your online ventures, you must act accordingly. Rather than acting in a passive manner, you must think about being proactive./p
pFor example think about a situation where you have an offline business operation and you want to take it online. There you would have acted as a business promoter who is using web as a tool to find more business or connections. Now this job role or profile is much more different from publishing a blog and spreading information and earning money from advertisements. As an online business promoter, the income from advertisement could be treated as residual income. And the main business model would have been selling products./p
pEverybody is talking about the negative affects of recession. However, there are some positive aspects to it too. And if you think about the positive aspects, I think it is high time to invest on development, even if you do not want to get straight into hardcore business. Do I sound mad? Ok, here are some of the reasons that you may consider:/p
p style=”30px;”1. Market is down but it is not flat. The inflated market is getting down to its actual shape and size. And it cannot get worst; you can only go upwards./p
p style=”30px;”2. The recession has resulted into job cuts. People are reluctant about a change unless they are bound to do so. You can easily take this opportunity to hire some great people for much less than what it would have cost you one year back. But, pay them their due, once you are in a good situation. And this is time to develop a good team along with some great products./p
p style=”30px;”3. If I am not wrong, people are more or less looking for cheaper alternatives. This is a tendency. If your product solves this problem, you have high chances to succeed./p
p style=”30px;”4. If you can bargain well, the promotional cost of the product will also be much less compared to 2007 or 2008./p
p style=”30px;”5. This point is open to you#8230;/p
pIs there any reason not to start a business now? Please share it/p

New Ikea Designed Solar-Powered Lights

Monday, den 9. March 2009

Ikea, the home furnishing design powerhouse, has unleashed a new line of solar-powered lights in preparation for the summer.  The outdoor lights are simple LEDs that use 70% less energy and last longer than conventional bulbs.  With the price of solar panels dropping and the need for renewable energy sources skyrocketing, it’s nice to see a big design group like Ikea getting onboard.

A unique value of solar-powered outdoor lighting is that there is no need for underground wiring or permanent positioning.  The practical and reasonable devices are… Continue reading New Ikea Designed Solar-Powered Lights

Pic: Our Strong Economy?

Monday, den 9. March 2009

We spotted this American Apparel ad on the back of local NYC publication. We suspect it has less to do with a reversal of the company’s provocative campaigns of the past and more to do with the current economic indicators. Foregoing the depiction of a scantily clad model for once, American Apparel instead introduces us to the wholesome image of Willie, “A valued member of our Fabric Control Team.”

With a total of 21 stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn - one location (pictured… Continue reading Pic: Our Strong Economy?
