In a recent Tweet on Twitter, Stephen Fry talks about his relationship to books and Twitter:

I collect books. Have done for years. I will no more throw out “real” books cos I have a Kindle than I’ll jettison pens cos I have a Mac

He does tweet later with another thought, though:

I’ve thousands of books and will continue buying them till I die. Smell and feel, yes. Maybe. But that was true of horses - lol… Continue reading Stephen Fry On Books & Kindle

Listable: A Place for Everyone’s Lists

Wednesday, den 11. March 2009

Even in our increasingly digital world of iPhones and Blackberrys, there’s something satisfying about a good To-Do list - the kind you write out on actual paper and cross items off of as tasks like “Drink Coffee” and “Fix the Economy” are completed. Or in another form, it’s hard to resist the allure of a Top Ten “fill-in-the-blank” list no matter how mundane the subject matter, both for the minimal commitment it requires of us and its infinitely debatable quality. From organization to utter enjoyment, the list already fulfills many of… Continue reading Listable: A Place for Everyone’s Lists

Subtle Innovation: The Brush & Rinse Toothbrush

Wednesday, den 11. March 2009

Amron Experimental’s Brush & Rinse Toothbrush is pretty much like any other toothbrush out there, except it has a slightly grooved back that redirects water from a running faucet into an easy to sip arch of water. That’s it. Simple perhaps, but it does beat using your hands, or a glass to grab water after brushing your teeth.

Will the world be dramatically changed because of the Brush & Rinse toothbrush? Definitely not. But it is an interesting tiny tweak that adds functionality to the device in a subtle… Continue reading Subtle Innovation: The Brush & Rinse Toothbrush

Has Crowdsourcing Gone Too Far?

Wednesday, den 11. March 2009

As much as the internet has fueled innovation through the free exchange of ideas and collaboration with anyone across the globe, are we also remaking a market economy that only benefits those on top who control the mass lines of distribution? Wired considers the pitfalls of crowdsourcing - a phenomenon once heralded for its ability to disrupt the traditional model of business by leveling the playing field for experts and amateurs alike - as more and more companies leverage its potential to their advantage which turns out, might not… Continue reading Has Crowdsourcing Gone Too Far?

Modular Transportation: Electric Scooter Sharing

Wednesday, den 11. March 2009

Anton Grimes’ entry into the Australian Design Awards competition is a smart twist on the increasingly popular bike sharing idea. He’s created a much more compact system for sharing electric scooters in urban areas.

Grimes explains his design:
The Link scooter system is designed as a modular transport solution that can be retrofitted to existing Streetscape Smart Poles. It allows users to hire a small lightweight electronic scooter from a hub and ride to the desired destination and then return the scooter to another hub, where it… Continue reading Modular Transportation: Electric Scooter Sharing

Are Our Ideas About Sustainable Food Out of Date?

Wednesday, den 11. March 2009

The ways our food is produced, packaged and shipped stands at the center of an ongoing debate about the health of our planet and ourselves, but the key to creating a sustainable system may rely on our collective ability to accept a realistic solution as a opposed to a perfect one. And this involves a concerted effort on the part of not only producers and consumers, but policy makers as well.

If we examine the farming methods in our country, we find a polarizing set of standards - industrial monoculture machines that… Continue reading Are Our Ideas About Sustainable Food Out of Date?
