Reorder: Individual Woolworth Stores Reopened As Wellies By Local Management

Is this a sign of ‘reorder’ taking affect? At the start of this year, the UK saw the bankruptcy of Woolworth’s and this closed 807 stores across the country. While the retail brand couldn’t apparently compete in this turmoil, several of the individual stores did turn a profit. After the closures, some of the old managers have leased the old properties and reopened the stores as Wellworths - or ‘Wellies’ for short.

Manufacturing Sector Makes A Comeback?

An article in the Telegraph argues that the current-shake up of the market has reversed the oft-predicted view that Western economies are drifting from a manufacturing to services focus. The paper says that oil, pharmaceuticals and technology production is making a come back in the UK while retail and banking is declining:

The UK Sustainable Cities Initiative

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) recently launched a new initiative designed to address the design and management of cities across the UK.  The Sustainable Cities initiative gathers data from two years of research by a team of 30 experts and the English Core Cities group.  The goal to make cities low carbon has grown to a massive project addressing affordable housing, energy security and job generation.  The group has identified climate change as a direct challenge to the efficency of managing a town… Continue reading The UK Sustainable Cities Initiative

The iPhone Art of Jorge Colombo

Artist Jorge Colombo has created some beautiful digital sketches that look like real paintings. They were all finger-drawn on the iPhone using the Brushes application. On Jorge’s site, you can watch the drawings come to life in animated recordings of the process.

Think to Develop and Build EV Cars in the US

Norwegian electric car maker Think announced yesterday that it plans to open a new manufacturing plant and technical center in the United States. The company is currently talking with eight states about a potential location for the facility. The company estimates initially 16,000 cars will be built a year by 300 workers. The technical center will employ 70 engineers and electric drive specialists. Think’s goal is to produce 60,000 electric vehicles per year and employ 900 workers.
