Thursday, den 26. March 2009

monocle magazine.jpgIf you do anything that involves retail, design, advertising or just getting stuff sold, we must recommend that you pick up a copy of the April 09 issue of Monocle Magazine. This issue has a focus on retail with articles that highlight the state of the retail market and where in the world we can seek inspiration.

The opening piece of the retail section conveys similar thoughts that we’ve published in these pages - that at the end of the day, we’re not really that surprised by the… Continue reading Monocle’s Top 20 Retailers

Taste the Ad, Buy the Product

Thursday, den 26. March 2009

Put this in the category of now we’ve seen everything - or perhaps more appropriately, tasted - US Ink, a subsidiary of Sun Chemical Corporation, has developed Taste-It Notes, a design innovation “Bringing Flavor… to Print Advertising.” We immediately pictured scented perfume ad meets supermarket sample, all combined in one edible strip. And while this sounds like a last ditch effort to save print advertising, representatives of First Flavor - the company that manufactures the strips - claim that initial audience trials have met with… Continue reading Taste the Ad, Buy the Product

Are you a crazy social media marketer?

Thursday, den 26. March 2009

pPeople try different ways to market themselves or a product they are working on. For example, here is the story of Jamie who thinks Twitter should hire her and thus she has started an online a href=”http://www.twittershouldhireme.com/2009/03/10-reasons-why-twitter-should-hire-me/”campaign/a via her a href=”http://www.twittershouldhireme.com/”blog/a and a href=”http://twitter.com/jamievaron”twitter/a (1386 followers). No matter whether you call it crazy or cool, she has definitely created some a href=”http://www.twittershouldhireme.com/press/”buzz/a in the market./p
pIt is a different issue whether Twitter will hire her in or not (they may have other criterions to shortlist a candidate for a specific profile) but she is already successful as a buzzer; at least for this campaign. (I will definitely strike through the word #8220;buzzer#8221; and write marketer once she gets the job at Twitter.)/p
pBut I will wait and watch if she can redirect this support to some private venture or not. I want to see what she does with this support. She may become an entrepreneur. But at the same time, she might also need to evaluate other possibilities like #8220;will this mass support continue when the reason will change#8221;! It is not easy to capture the ripple effect generated in social media marketing (social media marketing aims to generate such ripple effects and then gives it a direction to achieve the end result). I will call her a great social media marketer, if she can do this./p
pDo you have such crazy, unorthodox ideas to promote your blog or product or CV? I should be more precise: #8220;would you like to try a crazy idea to promote your blog or business!#8221;/p
pBefore you start please find answers to these questions:/p
p style=”30px;”* Does your business model or product category support crazy ideas?/p
p style=”30px;”* Does your product have enough potential or characteristics to carry on with the buzz and make some profit?/p
p style=”30px;”* Does this idea go with your brand (or the brand identity that you are trying to develop)?/p
p style=”30px;”* Are you hitting the target market with the right level of motivation?/p
p style=”30px;”* Are you being crazy for the right reason?/p
p style=”30px;”* Are you being crazy in the right way?/p

You’ve probably visited WebMD to answer your health questions. And the iTunes App Store already offers over 200 medicine-related apps, like information on drugs and heart-rate monitoring devices. But two new devices for the new iPhone OS demonstrate just how the iPhone is going to make monitoring your health both more immediate and interactive. One app can control a blood-pressure cuff that plugs in to your iPhone, and Johnson & Johnson revealed a similar app and device that tests blood glucose levels.

PCMag explains the far-reaching implications:
Since… Continue reading Self-Help with Medical Apps for the iPhone

A Different Truth Can Be Hiding Behind Statistics

Thursday, den 26. March 2009

Journalist Michael Blastand has written an interesting, simple but eye opening article that explains the correct way to think about all the scary “statistics” thrown around haphazardly in the news so often. He explains just how percentages mean nothing unless put into proper context.

Revolutions Explains:
We see risk statistics in news articles every day. “One extra unit of alcohol a day increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 12%.” “Bacon increases your risk of colorectal cancer by 20%.” But what do those numbers really… Continue reading A Different Truth Can Be Hiding Behind Statistics

Guitar Hero with a Banjo

Thursday, den 26. March 2009

The “Oh No Banjo” exhibit has to be one of the cooler bits we’ve seen from the Game Developers Conference currently underway. The showcase featured the work of students who participated in the “Alternative Controllers Seminar” at Rochester Institute of Technology last semester. They created this modified play instrument by taking a guitar game-controller and building a true to form banjo around it. They even wrote custom software and musical arrangements… Continue reading Guitar Hero with a Banjo

The Library Renaissance

Thursday, den 26. March 2009

The New York Times reports that New York City’s library use is surging during the current economic downturn. This increase in usage is turning libraries into a kind of makeshift employment center. The new denizens of the library are largely made up of  job seekers, and patrons with dwindling resources. Shared computer time is being eaten up by frantic patrons looking for work and resume books are on near permanent loan. For some, the library is becoming a virtual office and base of operations as they’ve had to cancel… Continue reading The Library Renaissance
