Last night, VW and Slate.com hosted a night of design discussion at the New York Museum of Art & Design. On the panel were Paula Scher- Graphic Designer and Parter at Pentagram, Ahmad Sardar-Afkhami- Architect, and Jonathan Adler– Furniture Designer. The discussion centered around how design is being affected by and adapting to today’s challenges.

How Walkable is Your Neighborhood?

Walk Score is a handy web-service that approximates the walkability of addresses and neighborhoods in the 40 largest cities in the US using an alogrithm - you can read about their entire methodology here - that takes into consideration proximity to stores, schools, parks and restaurants while weighing this information against the need for a car. With that in mind, their list of the top ten most walkable cities looks like this:

Wheat Paste Jesus Attracts Religious Pilgrims

Wooster Collective points out a powerful example of street art that has caused quite a commotion in New England. Artist Maki105 put up a wheat-paste poster titled  “Peek-A-Boo Jesus” on the side of a video store in New Bedford Massachusetts, and it’s getting a lot of serious attention by religious pilgrims.

Online Project in UK Could Expand Your Family Tree

In what is being called the biggest undertaking of its kind, UK-based genealogy website ancestry.co.uk is embarking on an ambitious project to make more than 77 million historical documents available online. The digital collection will archive information that had previously been scattered across the city of London, into a single database that users can access for a fee. Wieden Kennedy’s Nokia Competition Shows That Crowdsourcing Sucks For The Crowd

The recent headphone competition that was run by Nokia by the London office of the advertising agency Wieden Kennedy highlights how much the odds seem stacked against creatives who participate in crowsdsourcing. After receiving entries from creatives with designs of headphones inspired by a favorite track, one of the top prizes was awarded to a designer that works both for Nokia and Wieden Kennedy - an action that specifically goes against the rules of the competition.

Using Bio-Feedback to Customise Amusement Park Rides

Engineers in the UK are working on a “fear detector” that will make amusement park rides tailored to the level of excitement riders want to experience. A video below shows more.

New Scientist explains:
A human operator can see a person’s heartbeat and facial expression and hear their reaction via a display, and use that information to control the motion of the ride.

The team is studying how the physiological data correlates with the emotions a person reports experiencing during a ride.
