Vice Mag: My City’s Hotter Than Your City

As we mentioned, the Vice Magazine fashion issue (pig and all) has hit the streets and as always, it’s a great read. In their city-vs.-city matchup, the magazine makes some bold claims about what’s in and what’s out across the globe. In a nutshell, it boils down to this:

  • Girls in NYC are sluts; boys are rockabilly
  • In Stokholm the boys are Xanax incarnate; girls don’t care
  • In Barcelona boys are dressing like girls and girls are dressing like boys
  • Melbourne boys are dressing up in a retro kind of way, and the

Ikea Leko is Car Sharing not Car Making

Fast Company reported today that the mysterious cloth draped car called the ‘Ikea Leko’ is actually a car sharing program in conjunction with Comuto, the French ride-sharing company behind Covoiturage.fr, for 26 IKEA locations in France. The service will be similar to the Ikea/zipcar program in the US pictured above.

Bicycle Built For 2,000

Bicycle Built For 2,000 is a fantastic crowd-sourced performance piece composed of 2,088 different voice recordings from around the world. Volunteers were paid $0.06 to sing a short bit of the song “Daisy Bell”, which was made famous as the first ever example of musical speech synthesis. The results were synced up into a disjointed, but intriguing composition. Experience it here, and watch the video below for a detailed background of the project.

Study Shows Action Video Games Can Improve Vision

Traditionally, It has been thought that staring at screens for too long will harm your vision in some way. Parents admonish their children to get away from the TV, and ergonomic studies have shown that long stretches of computer work are not kind on the eyes.

EcoDrain Captures Wasted Energy

Ecofriend points us to an interesting invention that recaptures wasted heat energy from a shower’s waste water. The EcoDrain will grab heated water before it goes down the drain and uses it’s heat to help wram incoming shower water. The Ecodrain’s creators believe that it could potentially save millions of dollars a year in energy costs.
