Talking Trash: The Scavengers’ Manifesto

Friday, den 3. April 2009

Salon recently spent a day with authors Anneli Lawson and Kristan Rufus who have taken the spirit of DIY culture and combined it with their unique perspective on consumerism in their book The Scavengers’ Manifesto, a guide for all those intrigued by notions of reduce, reuse and recycle, but don’t necessarily want to lose out on the best that life has to offer. For the two authors, this book represents a way of life and an opportunity to take their point of view into the mainstream. This guide… Continue reading Talking Trash: The Scavengers’ Manifesto

Chris Jordan On Overnight Shipping

Friday, den 3. April 2009

We love this latest work by Chris Jordan (an artist we’ve been following for a while now) which depicts, in packing peanuts, the number of overnight packages (166,000) sent in the U.S every hour. The blizzard of styrofoam is a not-so-gentle reminder of the energy and waste we’re contributing with every fedex slip we sign…

Death Of Voicemail

Friday, den 3. April 2009

200904031423.jpg

The New York Times pointed to a thought piece that I wrote last May about the death of voicemail. In the piece I wrote about how visual voicemail was stopping people from checking their mail (as they could see who had called pretty easily with phones like the iPhone):

Delta will soon be implementing new seats in their coach class cabin, collectively called “The Cozy Suite”, Thompson Solutions‘ new seat configuration intended to give passengers a more comfortable, snoozable ride. The seats’ design is the result of a nearly 7 year process of research, experimentation, and testing by Thompson Solutions. According to Wired:
[Thompson] started by observing passenger behavior on both short- and long-haul flights. Thompson’s Brian Rogers says the design team came away with two main findings: passengers trying to… Continue reading Coming Soon: Staggered (Cozier) Seating on Delta

Designing NYC’s E-waste Bin

Friday, den 3. April 2009

Traditionally, the New York way of dealing with stuff that’s lost its right to be part of our apartments or offices is to put it on the street and wait for it to disappear. Obviously, this process isn’t great for waste that shouldn’t end up in a landfill or can’t be dispersed by the wind - like electronics. However community-based recycling programs are sporadic with collection and lack funding, and commercial disposal for businesses is pricey.

On the bright side: last year New York City decided to be the first US city… Continue reading Designing NYC’s E-waste Bin
