Comment Spammers Have Turned “Nice Post” into a Spam Alert

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

One of the things that I dislike most about comment spammers is that they take otherwise useful or pleasing phrases and make them part of their spam comments. For instance, “Nice post.”
It’s not that I don’t like friendly, complimentary comments. It’s just that, more often than not, that phrase at the beginning of a [...]

NY Auto Show: Hyundai Reveals New Design Focus

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

Hyundai has created some innovative programs surrounding its vehicles like the America’s Best Warranty offer and the quickly copied Hyundai Assurance program that allows customers to walk away from a financing obligation when certain adverse life events occur like the loss of a job. What Hyundai hasn’t managed to do with great success is translate this kind of innovative thinking into the design of its vehicles. Until now.

Today at the NY Auto Show, the company unveiled a new hybrid crossover concept vehicle… Continue reading NY Auto Show: Hyundai Reveals New Design Focus

Wooooo Mag #6

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

wooooo.jpg

When Jason Crombie sent me the sixth issue of his occasional zine Wooooo I was a little nervous about trying to even get into reading it. The walls of text within the minature booklet seemed to counter my world of browse and graze and I didn’t know where to start. So instead of flicking through to a page that caught my eye, I began at the beginning and immediately felt a sense of envy.

In Wooooo #6 slip across the spill that is Jason’s and his collaborators’ writing. It’s magazine is filled with… Continue reading Wooooo Mag #6

Finding long tail keywords.

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

pIn my last post, I was discussing the a href=”../../../../../do-you-have-the-right-keywords/”importance of selecting the right set of keywords/a. Today, I will push the topic further./p
pWhat is the normal SEO process followed by most of the companies (especially those who outsource the SEO tasks to other companies)?/p
pThey identify a set of keywords and optimize content accordingly. Once the content is ready, they start link building for the campaign. After a few months, they change the keyword list and continue the same process./p
pWhat is the problem with this process?/p
pWhenever you change the keyword list and shift your link focus, there are all the reasons for your ranking to drop very soon. The process somewhat is exclusionary whereas, it should focus on including more keywords to the existing list. Yes, you sometimes also need to exclude some keywords. But, it should solely depend on the performance of the keyword - the conversion ROI./p
pAs the site starts growing mass and search engines start sending you traffic for different keywords, you stand a better chance to identify the best keywords. Trust me, the analytics report can tell you much more than a href=”http://www.wordtracker.com/”WordTracker/a or a href=”https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal”Google/a./p
pAll you need to do is to identify the right keywords that can offer you better conversion rate and niche visitors. Focus on these keywords and identify specific page for each set of keywords. (Do not target all your keywords on the home page unless you have a one page website.) Look for long tail keywords that are performing well or got chances to perform well under favorable conditions. And this is where you can actually outgrow your competitors as far as return on investment is concerned./p
pWhat if your site is not old enough to offer you enough data on long tail keywords? You may think about using the a href=”http://www.google.com/sktool/”Search-based Keyword Tool from Google/a. Avinash Kaushik has written a a href=”http://www.kaushik.net/avinash/2009/04/googles-search-based-keyword-tool-monetize-long-tail-search.html”great post/a on it./p
pAnalytics report has the key to make a campaign successful./p

Rite In The Rain - The “Freelancer’s” Daybook?

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

rite_in_the_rain.jpg

Feel that your Moleskine doesn’t really fit your image now that you’re “freelance” and half of your current one is full of notes of work you did for a company you don’t quite want to be reminded of yet?

Developed to survive the outdoor work of the Pacific Northwest logging industry in the 1920s, the waterproof Rite-In-The-Rain notepad may be the perfect alternative for all the new freelance consultants who half-fear half-welcome this summer in the park squinting at a laptop that can’t find the municipal WiFi.

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

Slate takes an insightful look at factors contributing to the sharp downturn suffered by the Australian wine industry which depending on who’s reporting has seen exports to the US fall by 15 percent to 26 percent in value during the last year. While a number of a uncontrollable circumstances - fluctuations in the global economy causing inflation in the Australian dollar and unforeseen environmental factors - can’t be dismissed, the most influential player in this current spiral might come down to branding.

The Vending Machine That Sells Luxury Cars

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

The Mondrian South Beach hotel has a unique vending machine that sells everything from away from home staples like toothbrushes to luxury goods - like a Bently Arnage. The fancy retail machine, called a Semi-Automatic stocks a list of over the top items including golden handcuffs, land and condos. For anything that can’t fit inside the vast, auto-mat-like contraption, customers trade in a voucher at the front desk to receive… Continue reading The Vending Machine That Sells Luxury Cars

Embedded Brands

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

The Design Management Institute has a very interesting article by Guido Stompff, Senior Designer at Océ Technologies in the Netherlands, about the concept of an ‘embedded brand’. An embedded brand is “a brand that derives from the deeply rooted, often unconscious paradigms, values, and beliefs of an organization that will will manifest itself in many subtle ways within the products.”

In simpler terms, Stompff talks about the creation of a brand where the design of a product, among many other things, somehow reflects what… Continue reading Embedded Brands

BumpTop: A More Tangible Desktop Interface

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

BumpTop is a desktop application that takes inspiration from your physical deskspace and allows you to organize and interact with files beyond pointing and clicking. All your desktop files can be physically pushed, pulled, stacked, and sorted.

It’s the physics engine that lets you lay out your files like a deck of cards, flip through them like a book, or organize them into piles.

The same interface can be applied to browsing through photos on your computer.

The Art of Thomas Broome

Thursday, den 9. April 2009

Thomas Broome is a Swedish artist whose most recent work features large format color paintings comprised of descriptive words.  These typographic illustrations are a surreal reflection on our mind’s constant definition of our surroundings.  The series entitled Modern Mantras was on display at the 556 Hz show at the Galleri Magnus Karlsson.  We wonder if he scribbled on his shoes as a child..
